Brian, WrappStarr's owner, says he'd rather pick paint — or do both. Here's why.
Customers ask us all the time whether they should wrap the car or repaint it. Our answer depends on what you want from the vehicle. If the paint is tired and you plan to keep the car for years, a good paint job is hard to beat. If the paint is still good and you want a new look or want to keep it protected, a wrap is the smarter move.
See our color change wraps, the car wrap cost guide and ceramic coating.
Vinyl acts like a layer between your clear coat and the Arizona sun, road debris and scratches. When the wrap comes off, the paint underneath is usually in much better shape than if it had been exposed the whole time — as long as the paint was in good condition when the wrap went on.
You can change the color and still keep the factory finish underneath, so you are not giving up the car's value. That matters if you may sell later.
If you plan to sell, a car with its original paint is generally worth more to the average buyer. Some people will pay extra for custom paint, but a custom color can also be harder to sell because it narrows the pool of buyers.
Left to ourselves, Brian would pick paint, and plenty of customers do both: wrap for color and protection, paint where it counts. Bad or failing paint should be fixed before wrapping, because vinyl will not hide peeling clear coat.
It depends on the film and the quality of the paint job you are comparing. On our cost guide, a compact car color change runs $3,000–$3,400 and a mid-size sedan $3,800–$4,600. Call or text (520) 600-1149 and we will quote your vehicle.
Not well. Vinyl needs a sound surface. Peeling clear coat or rust should be repaired first, or it will show through and the wrap may not stick.
On sound factory paint, a professionally installed and removed wrap should not. Repainted or damaged paint can lift during removal, which is why we look at the paint first.
